Just found out that Julian Sutton (JS hereinafter) will be the third tutor at this year’s Halsway D/G weekend, so a little anecdote…

About ten years ago I went to Melodeons at Witney and JS was one of the tutors. The workshop of his I went to was “all abilities” and I was very much a beginner. It was way, way beyond me and I came away massively frustrated and annoyed that it was not as pitched. Trying to learn “The Great North Run” and “93 Not Out” at great pace, suitable for beginners?! I walked out knowing I’d learnt nothing and wasted that time when I could’ve gained useful knowledge/ technique in a different workshop.

Fast forward to last year at Halsway when playing in the bar one evening, someone started a tune and I joined in without particular difficulty although I didn’t know it, and also the one they segued into. “What were they?” I asked, “I don’t know them but seemed to be able to play them.” The reply, of course, was “The Great North Run into 93 Not Out.”
I’m not saying I guarantee I could repeat the capability to just join in and play them, but clearly something had stuck and I’d done JS a great disservice!

Ok, I found the coolest thing ever.

===Cyberpunk Bluegrass Music===

@coreysnipes suggested I look into Bluegrass in addition to my current studies of Irish Trad music as I learn how to play the Irish whistle. That makes sense as a lot of Bluegrass stems from old Irish music.

In my search for Bluegrass music with Irish whistles, I stumbled across Justin Myles Holmes' "Barlow's Jig".

And get this... after listening to an Irish whistle, a banjo, a fiddle, and other instruments playing a bluegrass jig...

...you hear a voiceover reading of "A Declaration of the Independence of Cyberspace (1996)" written by none other than John Perry Barlow, founding member of the @eff

John Perry Barlow. Barlow's Jig.

My worlds have collided.

Heck, I'd argue that Folk Music + Calls for Digital Independence = Solarpunk !!!

Give it a listen here (the voiceover starts at 2:45 but listen to the leadup as well):

One main reason why I like the Irish Whistle and Irish "Sessions" is that its a way to play music with your neighbors.

There is a low barrier of entry to getting a fipple flute (many can be 3D printed as folks have noted) and mass produced ones are $10 to $20 USD for entry-level ones. Other folk instruments can be approachable as well and many can be passed down, gifted, or sold "used".

Learning to play is straight forward with plenty of free or low cost ways to learn - either online or even better from each other locally.

But the big thing is that finding local "jam sessions" is straight forward. And organizing ones where they dont exist yet is easy as well. Folks play in a pub for heavens' sake. Folk music exists in every culture and has existed since humans (and their ancestors) could bang a stick for blow air over a fipple or an embouchure while sitting around a fire.

You don't need to pay for a concert.

You don't need to form a band.

You don't need to buy an album, be fed from an algorithm, or get everything from a corporation.

You just get together and play with each other.

It's the community theater of music. The old ways still exist and folks are still coming together to take care of each other. Corporations have had a good run isolating us and leaching our money, but we aren't limited to that.

(Also if you dont want to play, you can sing. Even if your singing voice is terrible! 😅 Or you can tap your feet, slap your thigh, whistle, or hum. Orrrr.... you can just drink a coke or a beer and listen to your neighbors play and sing! Clapping and cheering go far!)

You can find local Irish trad sessions that you can play with or listen to here: https://thesession.org/sessions

What sorts of folk music do you have in your area? What instruments are played? What songs are sung?

I've been enjoying learning the Irish Whistle / Tin Whistle. Bought a very inexpensive $15 USD whistle and been tooling on it for a couple of months learning off of free youtube videos.

I suck at it but I really enjoy it and want to continue learning.

So since I'm sticking with it, I figure I ought to take some lessons. Gonna sign up with https://oaim.ie .

Also looking at getting an "expensive" tin whistle. Looking at some between $150 to $250 USD for a single high D whistle.

As an aside, I really have enjoyed listening to the Uilleann Pipes and looked into how much a cheap set would cost...

...nope. Gonna stick with my penny whistle. 😅 (at least for now 😝)

The Albion Band’s “Lark Rise to Candleford” was one of my childhood exposures to folk, and I still have my parents vinyl of it. Listening to it again, I had forgotten quite how good it is. Though I appreciate different tracks to I used to, I think that uplifting opening is why I have such affection for “Brighton Camp”.

Also you can play a guessing game each time you hear a melodeon: is that John Kirkpatrick or John Tams playing it? (What, you didn’t know that Tams could play the box as well as singing, fiddling etc? Shame!)
