“Attention, incomplete validation, risk of fine”: the new scam via SMS that uses the names of Atm and Atac to steal data and empty your account.
A new wave of scam SMS attacks targeting public transport users. The Postal Police have raised the alarm, urging caution regarding messages appearing to come from Atm Milano or Atac Roma. The statement refers to alleged irregularities related to the Tap&Go service and the risk of an immediate fine payable through a link.
The mechanism is simple but effective: fraudsters exploit the fear of receiving a fine to pressure people into acting quickly. The messages speak of an “incomplete validation” or an incorrectly recorded trip. At that point, they ask you to regularize your position online through a link that, in reality, leads to websites created to steal personal and banking data. The Postal Police have clarified that these are false communications. Both transportation companies have also warned users, inviting them to distrust suspicious messages and not to click on the links contained in the SMS. Indeed, neither Atm nor Atac ask for payments via SMS for alleged irregularities related to Tap&Go. Behind these messages are phishing campaigns designed to steal sensitive information or money from victims.
The advice remains the same: never click on links in suspicious SMS messages, do not enter personal data or credit card numbers, and immediately delete the message. If in doubt, it’s best to contact the transportation company directly through official channels or to contact the Postal Police.
Fraud is increasing
In recent months, digital fraud has increased and often follows similar schemes: false parking tickets, unpaid tolls, or communications that appear to come from known organizations. Cybercriminals bet everything on urgency and psychological pressure, and they seek in all ways to convince people to react without verifying the authenticity of the message.
