Sydney reached 30°C just before 2pm this Friday, and edged up to 30.3°C at 2:30pm, making it just the third time the city has reached the 30-degree mark in winter since records began in 1858. Sydney's August (and winter) record is 31.3°C, and while Friday's maximum appears to have fallen short of that mark, other parts of the city recorded their hottest winter day on record. Sydney Airport broke its winter record of 31.1°C this Friday, reaching 31.6°C at 2:48pm. Even though the main city weather station's record hasn't been broken, this week's heat has still been remarkable because of its persistence. Bear in mind that the average winter maximums at Sydney’s main weather station at Observatory Hill (on the fringe of the CBD near the Harbour Bridge) are: June 17°C July 16.5°C August 17.9°C CLICK HERE FOR LONG-TERM SYDNEY CLIMATE DATA In August 2024 to date, Sydney's running average maximum has been 21°C, some 3.1 above the long-term average. Sydney maximum temps over the last 10 days up until and including Friday have been: 26.2°C, 23.7°C, 22.9°C, 26.9°C, 23.1°C, 24.9°C, 23.5°C, 28.1°C, 24.5°C, 30.1°C So that's an ongoing stretch of 10 days when each day's maximum temperature has been at least five degrees warmer than average, with some days well over 10 degrees above the average. By any measure, that is a remarkable run. The unseasonable heat is being caused by exceptionally warm northwesterly winds for winter. These winds are being driven over eastern Australia by a strong low pressure system far down in the Southern Ocean, and an associated cold front flicking southern Victoria and Tasmania. While the front is causing bitterly cold weather in Tasmania, most of the cold air staying is well south of the mainland.

🌡️ July 21, 2024, was the hottest day ever recorded globally: +17.09°C, surpassing the previous record of +17.08°C from July 2023.
This peak is linked to a rare sudden stratospheric warming over Antarctica. #Climate #Environment #TemperatureRecord #SSW #Antarctica
😱☀️ 🌡️ 'We're screaming into the void.' Across the U.S., heat keeps breaking records

"When Joe Pascale moved to the desert city of Palm Springs, Calif., about 17 years ago it was hot, but in the mornings and evenings there was a break from the heat.
“'You could get up in the morning and it would be relatively cool and you could enjoy outside, even in the dead of summer,' he says. 'The mornings would be just brilliant.'
"'That doesn't exist for us anymore, and it's a huge loss,' he says.
"#PalmSprings has broken temperature records one after another in the last week. The city hit 122 degrees on July 8, the hottest temperature ever recorded for that day, according to the National Weather Service [#NWS].
"Last Friday, the city broke its all-time high #TemperatureRecord when it hit 124 degrees. Even in the early mornings this week, the temperature has still been in the low 90s or high 80s.
"Pascale recognizes the connection between his increasingly hot city and #ClimateChange, caused largely by humans burning #FossilFuels.
"'Sometimes we feel like we're screaming into the void,' Pascale says. 'There's a problem that we need to be addressing.'
"Last year was the hottest year on record for the world. The U.S. is warming up at a faster rate than the global average, which means the effects of #GlobalWarming will be more pronounced.
"#Arizona, #California, #Oregon and #Nevada have all seen record-breaking heat in recent weeks. And while the heat wave is mostly in the West, states across the country like #NorthCarolina and #Maryland have also seen temperature records fall this summer.
"'It’s not subtle,' says Joellen Russell, an oceanographer and climate scientist at The University of Arizona, who notes her city, #TucsonArizona, also saw a high temperature record fall this week.
"'We're going to continue [breaking temperature records] as long as we keep increasing the amount of #GreenhouseGases in our atmosphere,' Russell says."

If I understand correctly, previous high temperature in New Orleans was 102 F (38.8 C), which we reached 4 times in the last 130 years, two of which were in the past week.
Today it got up to 105 F (40.5 C)
