Sustained growth through creative destruction: Nobel laureates Philippe Aghion and Peter Howitt

Philippe Aghion and Peter Howitt have been jointly awarded the 2025 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences with Joel Mokyr ‘for having explained innovation-driven economic growth’. Aghion and Howitt were cited by the Nobel committee ‘for the theory of sustained growth through creative destruction’. As this column explains, their work transformed creative destruction from an evocative metaphor into a rigorous analytical framework. The Nobel recognition honours research that has fundamentally reshaped how economists understand the engines of prosperity and technological progress.

In a new book, economists Daron Acemoglu and Simon Johnson provide a sweeping historical overview of just how unevenly the spoils and costs of #TechnologicalChange have been distributed. ...finds that, unlike earlier work which suggests job losses and worse job quality, workers in routine jobs are more likely to move to higher-skilled, non-routine jobs in the same or a different firm, even for workers above 55. Institutions like apprenticeships and unions providing training opportunities for workers may help in avoiding the potentially harmful career effects of #TechnologicalChange.

The effect of new technologies on workers, jobs, and skills

The decline in the employment share of routine jobs is typically attributed to technological and organisational change. This column uses firm-level data to understand the nature of these changes in Germany. The authors find that workers in routine jobs in fact move to more skilled jobs after technological and organisational change. This suggests that technological change need not result in a significant welfare loss, even for those workers whose jobs are directly affected.

This is a really insightfull article. The authors conducted a large-scale empirical study of 400 e-commerce firms to understand the implications of the tension between efficiency and flexibility on firm performance in response to #GDPR. They found that firms that had built their websites and tech-services for efficiency, electing tightly integrated services from closely linked suppliers, suffered disproportionately when GDPR came into force. In contrast, companies that deployed new combinations of technologies not extensively used before performed much better.

Pretty good insight for those working in the US and AU at present as we navigate changes to our local data protection and governance regulations.
