Kun moraalinen ristiriita kasvaa liian suureksi, ihminen valitsee sen vaihtoehdon, jonka kanssa on helpompi elää. Ääriliikkeessä ihminen luovuttaa itsensä kollektiiviselle utopialle, ja vahva tunne samaan porukkaan kuulumisesta sitoo yhteen. Mustavalkoinen maailma ja syntipukit, joihin voi kohdistaa vihansa, helpottavat monimutkaisen maailman tulkintaa.
