Stephanie Mills. What Cha Gonna Do With My Lovin' (12" version)

This lovely lush Philadelphia-inspired dance track from Stephanie Mills is a late disco gem, although at the slower end of disco-tempos. Like so many of my disco faves this mixes a soul sensibility with a floor-filling rhythm section. Mills' emotive vocal is beautifully framed by the arrangement, making this a late 70s soul classic. Enjoy.

Lo último que supe de ella fue aquel titular (es tan retrodiva) diciendo que ganaba más con fotos de sus pies que con los réditos de sus canciones.

Lily Allen trae un álbum posdivorcio tantos años después. Sigue avispada, con el buen gusto pop intacto y deslenguada... ¡lo canta todo! En la western Madeline (la amante ficticia) dispara resumiendo el disco en su intento de catarsis.

Vengo in love de uno de los últimos tracks. Dallas Major reluce como un lucero. Un single muy Mariah, de minimal hip hop poppie, que va como un trineo por una pendiente amable entre scratches de dj, puente instrumental y unos versos que son sentencias.

Y qué visual para youtube, Training Season bratz version.

Yo empecé por el final, pero Allen narra esto casi cronológico. Así, Fruityloops cierra a lo grande la desventura, y se escucha bien porque cada pista funciona sola. Ahora tiende a la balada melódica preciosista sin dejar de atizar, recuperando su mordaz It's not me, it's you.

El primer single muestra, en cambio, la estupefacción por sentirse un instrumento, objetizada, en la relación. Pussy Palace describe intimidades y amalgama todo en un estribillo no por basarse en la manida repetición pop menos glorioso. Triunfa parecido Relapse vododerizando a Lily, ¿disociándola?, sobre un electrobeat soberbio, mientras duda entre un Valium o una copa.

West se siente por momentos cargado de letras y falto de ganchos, pero la necesidad de escupir es imperiosa y justificada. La propia West End Girl es la muestra, o la siguiente, Ruminating. Se atenúa la impresión en Sleepwalking, el tema que Meghan Trainor querría componer, con espíritu de nana.

Queda un obrón.

I wanna listen to more classic #disco, since that's a style I don't know very well. My dad raised me on some #funk and blues. But no disco, and now that I'm digging into what Surinamese people have done in #house music (as well as learning about other regional styles of house), I wanna learn the history and stylings of disco.
