Is it possible that's because of the work done in the last decade to reduce the threat they pose? Defensive patent portfolios, free patent licences for FOSS projects, Alice decision, #SWPats rejection in the EU, etc.?

I'm thinking of all the "Y2K was over-hyped" commentary that fails to remember the work put in to deal with the problem.
