New video! Trying out my new digital microscope and soldering up an RGBtoHDMI board for the Amiga. Doing some small scale SMD work for the first time in my life.

New Microscope and RGBtoHDMI Build

YouTube

Got to solder some little SMD components today for @skyguided 's plasma toroid inverter PCB. I found all the parts onlline, and once I get a few more revisions done on my next round of PCB orders I will be getting the rest of the parts.

Excited to get this thing working- its neat getting a sense of how it works by assembling it and studying the schematics. So far, my favorite parts are the thermostat by the MOSFETS and the photo flash capacitor charge IC (seen with messy flux all over it under the microscope). Excited to blow and fill some oddball shapes and play around the ionized toroid fills.

With the right tools, SMT is fuuun! Sooooo tiny :)

There’s no denying how useful surface mount technology is, and how enabling the ability to make really small circuits has become. It comes at a price, though; most of us probably know what it…

Hackaday

My latest attempt at hand-soldering surface-mount components, "for real" this time, to modify an Elecraft KBPF3 board into a KBPF3A board by removing L1 and L2, and piggy-backing 0.1uF capacitors atop C3, C4, and C6.

I think I did rather a nice job, thanks to lots of practice on a practice board, reducing my caffeine intake, having good tools, and just being very careful and patient. 0603 components are tiny, but do-able.

Dime for scale.

One of my bank holiday weekend activities… #Maker #SurfaceMount #Soldering

Just got a surface mount sample book. Though all of my electronics stuff is on hold this week. I've got a lot of unexpected requests coming through and I can't keep up with them!

I completed the SMD challenge! It was easy up to the 0603 components, but I had to use my binocular microscope after that. I lost the first 0201 LED when trying to flip it over, but thankfully held on to the second one. The 0201 LED was not marked for polarity, so I had to take a best guess looking at the part under the microscope.
