Die Wurzeln des Inkscape-Projektes sprossen, auf eine Art, die für Open-Source-Software nicht ungewöhnlich ist, gegen Ende des Jahres 2003 aus einem Fork eines Vorgängerprojektes namens Sodipodi.
Softwareentwickler Bryce Harrington war einer von denen, die ein Teil des Anfangs von Inkscape waren. Er kommt aus Oregon in den USA, ist der Vorsitzende des Inkscape-Vorstandes und kommt immer noch zu Hackfesten und nimmt an Teambesprechungen teil.
