✨ Ever wonder why fresh snow sparkles in sunlight? Individual crystal facets act as tiny mirrors. When light hits at just the right angle, these flat surfaces create specular reflection: brilliant pinpoints distinct from snow's overall whiteness. Old snow loses this sparkle as crystals round through sintering, trading mirrors for curves.

Snowwflake close up. These are flakes with quite a little history of melting, refreeze and later faceting. Faceting is a fascinating prossess during which the ice crystal grows by vapor deposition. This occurs in the snowpack when the air outside is well below zero for many days ina row. As a result we start to identify faces and planes on the crystals. Here the snowflakes were finally starting to round again due to a vanishing temperature gradient inside the snowpack. Also interesting to observe the air bubbles trapped inside the crystals. Not common. But most interestingly, none of the original snowflakes that fall from the sky remain. All have been going theough complete reorganization, we call snow metamorphisms.

Some fun memories. In Norway I spent a bunch of time poking around mountains on Kvaløya, practicing my snowcraft, exploring with friends and speaking with the mountains on some solo missions.

I sure miss it. And I'm so grateful I got to go there. Life has been pretty bittersweet in the few years since - however, it's always something I'll remember...

"Here, we map where snow meets the forest by computing the proportion of snowfall over forest. We used a global climate reanalysis and satellite tree cover data to derive the fraction of snowfall over forests at 0.1° resolution."

LogOn: Satellites, Lasers Help Estimate Snowpack in Drought-Stricken Regions

For water managers in drought-stricken regions, accurate forecasts of water availability are critically important. Matt Dibble shows how remote sensing technology is helping in the Rocky Mountains in this edition of LogOn.

I've recently been interested in taking my (AST1) Avalanche Skills Training course. I've been an avid skier my whole life and want to better understand terrain, forecasting conditions, and planning for being in the backcountry.

I'm currently getting setup for touring and would like to take this course in spring 2024. Any fellow skiers have any tips, or interested in doing this with me?
