More salmon! This time from Natalie Koopman, working on #CapeBreton (#NovaScotia) Atlantic salmon, which have sene steep declines. #Hatcheries have been used for decades, here. Smolt to adult supplementation is where #salmon live in the #river at younger life stages, but are then brought into the hatchery during #smolt. 64 tagged salmon showed that the longer the fish spent in captivity the higher survival in the wild, but those that spent less time (1 year) in captivity moved upstream #FSBI2025

These interesting devices, technically called rotary screw traps (RST) or auger trap, are passive sampling gear, using water flow to capture and retain downstream migrating #fish. It works using an Archimedes screw as its central axis.

It is commonly called a smolt wheel because it targets the small #smolt stage of #Salmon for counts and non-lethal collection. They have been deployed extensively in Pacific coast, Atlantic Canada, and in the #GreatLakes.

It's called a smolt wheel, and it's changing what scientists know about migrating salmon | CBC News

A smolt wheel set up near the mouth of the Terra Nova River is helping scientists better understand migration of young salmon.

We used #outlieranalysis and #telemetry and found that migration success of Atlantic #salmon depended on genotype. See what you think:
