Checking out #GearLibraries just makes sense

Sharing equipment makes #OutdoorRecreation more accessible, equitable and #sustainable.

By Amy Paradysz, Winter 2025-26

"We're all familiar with the principle behind #libraries: The community shares a collection of books so we can all access media without having to buy, own or store it. Gear libraries are built on the same notion: Sharing equipment makes outdoor recreation more accessible, more equitable and more sustainable. And sometimes it just makes good sense: Do you really want to own that pull-behind ski chariot that you might use once or twice?

"Thanks to a new coalition called the #MaineGearLibraryNetwork, it’s becoming easier to access a wider variety of gear throughout the state. For example, although #KindlingCollective in downtown #PortlandME doesn’t have enough space to stock a wide variety of outdoor apparel, their members can borrow what they need through #MaineGearShare in #BrunswickME at no additional charge.

" 'The network is a growing coalition of community organizations that are working together to make outdoor recreation more accessible, especially for rural, low-income and historically excluded communities,' said Maine GearShare Advancement Manager Emily Mackeown. 'This means that more Mainers can enjoy the outdoors in all seasons.'

"The lending or renting model varies greatly across the network. At some gear libraries, members can check out items for free—and membership may be as simple as having a card to your local library.

"More commonly, there’s a fee to check out items, but gear libraries that are nonprofits or under the auspices of a public library or university can charge less than a for-profit rental business would.

"Sometimes there’s a sliding scale based on socioeconomic factors; basically, people with more resources subsidize gear for those with fewer resources. At some gear libraries, groups like school outing clubs can save a great deal of money by purchasing a membership that covers hundreds of 'participant days' worth of gear, eliminating choices of what gear, exactly, they can afford to borrow."

#PlayCycle - What is a #ToyLibrary?

"Toy libraries are community resources to help children learn and grow through play. Similar to a library of books, a toy library enables families to check out toys, enjoy them, and return them before borrowing more. Toy libraries benefit children, families, and communities by:

ENCOURAGING PLAY- The American Academy of Pediatrics says that play is essential to development because it contributes to the cognitive, physical, social, and emotional well-being of children and youth (Ginsburg 2007). Toy libraries help facilitate imaginative play by providing access to hundreds of toys that children might otherwise not encounter because of limitations due to finances or space. With a toy library, children can borrow toys that spark their imagination and simply return toys when they are ready to explore something new.

SAVING MONEY AND PREVENTING CLUTTER- According to a Toy Industry Association report, the average family spends $581 per year on toys. One fifth of households surveyed had over 100 toys. A toy library allows families to save money on buying individual toys and also reduce clutter by returning toys to the library when they have finished enjoying them.

REDUCING WASTE- The lifecycle for toys after purchase usually involves play for a few weeks or possibly years, followed by being thrown away or donated. Toy libraries help reduce toy waste and promote a circular economy. Toy library toys have their useful lives extended by years while they are enjoyed by children from multiple households. They also reduce the number of toys that each household needs to buy and store.

It is estimated that there are over 300 toy libraries in the United States, but they can still be hard to come by. Toy libraries are found all over the world, sometimes supported by local government bodies or as part of local public libraries. One thing they all have in common is the mission to encourage growth and development through play. We are thrilled to join the assembly of toy libraries making play accessible for children all over the world."

Good Idea: Start a free store

https://www.shareable.net/how-to/how-to-start-a-free-store-in-your-community/

If you’re tired of seeing good stuff thrown away while neighbors go without, start a free store.
A free store is simple. Anyone can take what they need. Anyone can leave what they can...

Pick somewhere easy to access and easy for you to check on. A quiet side street, outside your home, near a community fridge, or even a vacant storefront can work. Good lighting and wheelchair access matter.

Keep it simple at first.
One sturdy bookshelf is enough. Add a clear sign that explains what it is and how it works. Secure it so it does not tip. Protect it from rain if it is outside.

Decide what you will accept.
Start small. Maybe just books. Or kitchenware. Or toiletries. Be clear. Post what is and is not allowed. If you bend the rules once, it gets messy fast.

Build a small team.
You can begin alone, but it is easier with help. A few neighbors to check on it daily makes a big difference. Create a group chat so everyone can stay in the loop.

Check it often.
Tidy it up. Remove items that sit too long. Keep it clean and welcoming. A cared for space stays cared for.

Spread the word.
Tell neighbors. Post in local groups. Put up a flyer. Make it easy for people to get involved.

Most of all, treat it like what it is: a shared space. Be friendly. Stay flexible. You will not control everything, and that is okay. Start small. Let it grow with your community
