🚆 Still time to ride this masterpiece! The Semmering Railway remains a key part of the Südbahn, offering one of Europe’s most scenic train journeys. With 16 viaducts, 100+ stone bridges & 14 tunnels, it winds through the Austrian Alps—especially stunning in autumn! 🍂 While the Semmering Base Tunnel will take over around 2030, there are still plenty of chances to experience this legendary route. Don’t miss ahmetyuksek.art’s stunning photos! 🚉✨ #SemmeringBahn #MyTrainMap

The Semmering Base Tunnel will be glorious. How much will it shorten the travel time? Wild guess, 30 minutes? Very important for freight, too.

Those who want to enjoy the scenery, or visit the stops inbetween, will be able to use local trains that use the old route, of course. Just like for all the other alpine base tunnels.

Why do many of the Railjets on the #SemmeringBahn stop in Semmering, but not in Payerbach-Reichenau, which seems like a clearly larger town? Historical reasons? Because of Semmering’s importance (?) as a (minor) winter sports centre?

But hey, I am not complaining. It’s nice to have a direct connection to Vienna, Graz, or even Prague from your accommodation in the small town. Not Venice, though, that train does not stop there.
