Your regular reminder that Christian and Evangelical leaders were much more progressive back in the 60s and 70s. Jimmy Carter was Southern Baptist, for instance.
The right infiltrated Evangelical churches in the 70s / 80s to shift all of American Christianity to the right and tie their faith to being right-wing.
It worked.

Minnesota pro-choice activists demand bodily autonomy for all and ICE out
St. Paul, MN – On January 22, the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade ruling, the Minnesota Abortion Action Committee (MNAAC) held a rally for reproductive justice near the Minnesota State Capitol. January 22, 1973 - Women won control of their reproductive rights when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Roe v. Wade that Americans have a constitutional right to privacy, and thus women may terminate a pregnancy before the last 10 weeks. Only during the last trimester, when a fetus can survive outside the womb, would states be permitted to regulate abortion of a healthy pregnancy.
Prior to the Court’s ruling that the decision was private and belonged to the pregnant woman, abortion was essentially illegal in all states except New York (as of 1970).
The Right says they're against abortion & even birth ctrl because women's only purpose is 2 have babies because God wants lots of souls created. If he wants lots of souls, why doesn't he have the babies himself? He's supposedly a powerful supreme being; let him have the morning sickness & birth pains.
