“I have had two abortions but I don’t regret them, I knew I wasn’t ready and I’m grateful for the opportunities that my mother didn’t have”: the words of Olivia Plath

The reality show that made her famous told the story of the Plath family, a fundamentalist Christian family from Georgia with incredibly strict rules about sexuality, social relationships, technology, and the role of women. Olivia Plath, now a very well-known face on American television and social media, in *Welcome to Plathville* had gradually become the “rebellious” figure, the one who increasingly distanced herself from the conservative universe in which she had grown up.

Now Plath has publicly revealed that she had two medication abortions using mifepristone, the drug at the center of the American political battle over the right to abortion. And the weight of her words, in the United States, is also linked to the religious context from which she comes.

“I’ve never regretted it,” she said in a video posted on Instagram, speaking about the two abortions. “I knew I wasn’t ready to become a mother and I would never have had children with that person.” The 28-year-old then linked her experience to that of her mother: “She came from a different generation and a much more controlling world. I always knew she had had more children than she truly wanted or felt able to raise.” Olivia explained that she had promised herself, from a young age, that she would not repeat that life: “I’m grateful to have had opportunities that my mother didn’t have. Every woman deserves support and autonomy over her own body.”

In the United States, the debate about medication abortion has reignited particularly after the Supreme Court overturned the historic Roe v. Wade ruling in 2022. Since then, several conservative states have sought to restrict access to mifepristone, even through legal battles over telemedicine prescriptions and the shipment of the drug by mail.

In recent months, Olivia Plath had already distanced herself from the image created by the reality show that had made her famous, announcing her definitive exit from the program after her divorce from Ethan Plath and denouncing “hatred, bullying and toxic dynamics turned into entertainment.”
