New #IUI2025 paper.

When people are denied a benefit by an algorithm, they should have access to #recourse. The most common approach is to offer a counterfactual explanation, eg: you would have gotten the loan if your credit score was 20pts higher. Counterfactuals seem attractive because they tell the person exactly what to do. But if circumstances unknown to the algorithm make that one course of action difficult, then other forms of explanation become a better choice.

"Extensive experimentation with real world and synthetic datasets demonstrates significant privacy #leakage through recourses. Our work establishes unintended #privacy leakage as an important risk in the widespread adoption of #recourse methods."

...#registration, the office warned.

That could leave works vulnerable to being copied, with little or *no legal #recourse* for #copyright infringement claims...

...an #author could not copyright individual #AIimages used to illustrate a #comic book, because each image was generated by #Midjourney—not a human #artist...

users do *not* exercise ultimate #CreativeControl over how such systems interpret prompts and generate material...

The advantage of distributed social aggregation platforms is that one #autocrat can't control the entire communications network.

The disadvantage of distributed social networking platforms is that one petty #tyrant of a #sysadmin can control or destroy *your* personal local ecology within the network.

This is why humanity invented #constitutional #democratic #republican #governance.

#Consent, #accountability, #recourse, and appellate process matter. #Justice matters.
