Omg. Since I don’t work in the NHS rn, I can say whatever tf I like during purdah before the next election on July 4th (yes, I know. We all know. It feels so fucking ridiculous.)
For non-UK people, ‘purdah’ is the 6 (?) weeks before UK (general..?) elections where
public service staff and organisations can’t say shit about nobody,
petitions are suspended (https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/659107/signatures/new get fucked again 🙄) , and
any big news stories with potentially political content are delayed massively.
A general election is *sort of* like the presidential election.
Afaik, it’s more like “vote for your local (dem/rep/green/lib/monster raving loony party - look it up), and the biggest party gets to decide who they want to be president / prime minister.”
Urgh. Feel free to correct whatever in the comments. I make no guarantees about the accuracy but I hope I’ve not mislead anyone.
Anyway: tory party / conservatives are, guess from the name, a bit like republicans-light.
Labour is, guess from the name, a bit like republicans-lighter.
There was a bit around 2012 when tories formed a coalition (paired / co-op) government with Liberal Democrats.
Lib Dems proceeded to do fuck-all with the glimmer of power they’d been given, leading to raised student loan fees for higher education (3- and 4-year bachelors degree students).
Turns out it’s easy to remember history when you lived it. I see why old people got annoyed with me for finding it boring when I was a kid and teen. In my defence, you need to explain WHY shit’s important for anyone to care.
This shit’s important because a) I can’t vote here because I wasn’t born here and haven’t paid about £1200 to apply for citizenship, b) we’ve been suffering under tories for literal decades now because “insert reactionary anger here” (sometimes reasonable but misaimed), and c) whatever you think of voting or the available candidates, the situation is likely to continue worsening if we keep emboldening anti-immigrant, anti-intellectual, and anti-equality ideas.
I’m not even trying to be rude here. I’m really trying to be chill with this.
