Why would a power tool turn on very briefly but stop again in less than a second?

FWIW it's a disc cutter with an induction motor with brushes.

EDIT Mains powered no battery.

I'm unaware of any functions that would require a microprocessor, but I don't know for sure that it doesn't have one.
