Talking Heads “Fear of Music” 1979
No one needs me to remind them about #TalkingHeads but I've realized that I may need to remind myself how great this album is, because it’s so overshadowed by their next album "Remain in Light." In fact I don’t think I was that familiar with this album until after I’d had my torrid affair with RIL. I knew “Life During Wartime” of course but didn’t care about that track then and I still don’t. But the rest of this album…
“I Zimbra” was their first stab at the ersatz African thing, the guiding principle of the next album - multilayered, #polyrhythmic with nonsense vocals just for the joy of their sound. “Memories Can’t Wait” is as heavy a track as you’ll experience, and "Mind" works its way into that state by the end - both more so than “Electric Guitar,” in delightful irony. The closing track “Drugs” seals the case that this is the new #PsychedelicRock for harsher times.
