DAW for a Malletstation?

Does anyone have expertise with midi controllers and audio output? My understanding is that this is a midi controller, and we need something like an iPad+Mainstage to output sounds.

It looks like I need to also buy something called a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) to link it together into a signal for the amp? Something like the MOTU M2 or similar? Do I actually need this or can the iPad handle everything?

I've been messing around with making music for years, but not done much with #MIDI. I just got a new keyboard (Akai MPK Mini IV), but my other hardware is ancient. I will experiment more and see what comes out.
