WIRE
Pink Flag
2018 Europe reissue

Before I start ripping through all the records I got as gifts this Christmas (which were a lot of #postpunk #punk and #newwave stuff), I have to listen to Pink Flag.

I posted Chairs Missing yesterday, and for me, I can’t listen to either of the first two Wire records without doing the other. They’re BOTH so badass and timeless, and I’ve heard both SO many times, they kind of play like one really long record in my head.

When we need to stretch out our live sets, “Ex Lion Tamer” is still a go-to.

Such a killer album.

Pink Flag is the debut studio album by the British post-punk band Wire. It was released in November 1977 through Harvest Records. It was produced by Mike Thorne, recorded from September to October, 1977, in Advision Studios, London. The album was acclaimed on release, and has since been highly influential; today it is regarded as a landmark in the development of post-punk music.

Reviewing in 1978 for The Village Voice, Robert Christgau called Pink Flag a "punk suite", praised its "simultaneous rawness and detachment" and detected a rock-and-roll irony similar to but "much grimmer and more frightening" than the Ramones...

...Pitchfork writer Joe Tangari summarized the album as "a fractured snapshot of punk alternately collapsing in on itself and exploding into song-fragment shrapnel." - Wikipedia

WIRE
Pink Flag
2018 Europe Reissue

Excellent sounding reissue of this, an upgrade copy for my original UK press that is so beat to hell that it is now unlistenable.

Any list of “Greatest Punk Albums Of All Time” that doesn’t have this in the Top 3 is not to be taken seriously.

The word is Pink
Wire, “Pink Flag” 1977

Once again I’m adding a late entry because I can’t let the day end without this one being covered.

At a time when most Americans hadn’t even heard of #punk, #Wire with their debut album #PinkFlag were already inching towards #PostPunk. They incorporated varied meter and time signatures with the bare-bones instrumentation and concentrated brevity of punk. Some of their compositions had clear roots in rock music; others were more sonic sketches than songs.

It might be hard to recall how refreshing this was to hear on college radio, like an astringent cleaning out ears filled with muck from commercial radio. In a larger sense though, whether you liked listening to this album or not, it paved the way for so much more.
