💾 Vintage Obsession 💾

I've been in love with this one for months, years, decades. Perhaps one day, when the moons align, I'll grab four Pentium Pro "Black Edition" CPUs and as much RAM as its mezzanine cards can handle, and ... well, you know how the rest of the vintage hardware story goes. Beautiful. The only concern is, "wtf is it doing on the EMI static-charged carpet for the photos?"

All orders have been delivered, time to replace the the RTC chip on the #PentiumPro motherboard.

Removing the chip went well with the desoldering gun and a bit of help with hot air for the GND pin.

I soldered a socket and used a nwX287 by Necroware. It feels slightly wrong to use a Varta battery in there but I guess that one will be fine.

There were no picture of the AOpen AX65 #PentiumPro board on #TheRetroWeb, so I did my best with my #fp5 and it turned out OK.

I then proceeded to remove the BIOS chip and dump its content with the #minipro.

Now, when dealing with motherboards where the BIOS has a sticker with its version on it, I never know if I should update it in place and make the sticker lie, or replace the EEPROM with a freshly flashed one instead and store the original.

The next problem with the #PentiumPro is more serious: the disk drive sometimes makes loud repeated clicks, as if it was trying to imitate an old alarm clock.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was the reason why the computer ended up in the trash.

Also, I couldn't get the the PS/2 mouse to work despite the jumper being set correctly. It could be caused by the RTC battery being dead (there is an option in the BIOS about PS/2 mouse), but I'll need to investigate a bit more.

@outofcreativity Thanks for the nice comment.

I know 16 bit code is not where the #PentiumPro shines, but it should still be at least as fast as a #Pentium running at the same clock speed, which is fine with me.

I will most likely reinstall it with a dual-boot #os2warp and #windows95

This beautiful stranger showed up at my door on Thursday. But sadly, she doesn't boot. So I'll be spending this evening figuring out why and hopefully fixing the problem. Wish me luck.

Kinda bummed out by the fact that an FFS filesystem from #OpenBSD cannot (well, I didn't manage) be mounted on #NetBSD. Luckily my homedir was pretty small so I just tarballed it.

Now I have NetBSD running the same config that OpenBSD was - on my dual #PentiumPro. It's a fair bit faster, due to less CPU-bug-mitigations being needlessly enabled, and much less of the software I install with pkgin needs SSE or more fancy instruction sets.

Thanks to both projects for maintaining support (for the time being..) for the aging i386 platform!

Today I picked up a few machines including what I thought was an #IBM #PentiumPro 200.

It turned out to be a DUAL Pentium Pro 200. Sweet!

I still don‘t know if I‘d like a boring noname #PentiumPro workstation or a rare #DEC Alpha #AXP for playing around with. Sad truth: That boring PC could run every system an AXP supports (DEC Unix, VMS, NT) too … plus many more (NeXTstep, Solaris, OS/2 …) but is far easier to get and maintain. 🥲
