🧩 Have you ever wondered why certain designs seem to show up in different cultures throughout history? Terry Moore dives into "Penrose tiling"β€”a fascinating concept where two simple shapes combine in infinite, non-repeating patterns. Could this be a universal connection through art and mathematics? πŸ€”βœ¨

Terry Moore: A mysterious design that appears across millennia

What can we make of a design that shows up over and over in disparate cultures throughout history? Theorist Terry Moore explores "Penrose tiling" -- two shapes that fit together in infinite combinations without ever repeating -- and ponders what it might mean.

This is a really cool physical manifestation of a really cool mathematical object!

(1/?) Patterned Penrose Pentagon thread

I submitted this picture to the 2021 JMM Art Exhibition with the following description:

β€˜This year, Sir Roger Penrose won a Nobel Prize in physics for his work involving black holes. This piece is intended to be a general celebration of his work.

It consists of an impossible shape referred to as the Penrose Pentagon, which appears to be patterned with an Penrose rhombus tiling. In actuality, the tiling has been done over a large area, but is only visible through the strategically-aligned impossible shape, with shading providing the illusion of depth.

Last year the β€œshadow” of black hole at the center of galaxy M87 was β€œphotographed” using the Event Horizon Telescope. Strangely enough, one can almost see a pentagon there. I have used a similar colour palette to tint this pentagon.’

Just watched the new #MinutePhysics and was playing with the interactive #PenroseTiling website. Here's one with nice vertical symmetry, I think. Can you spot a flaw?

I learned about Islamic geometric designs a few years ago, and last week I thought about using the method in a project. But I could not figure out how to do it, so I decided to switch to a Penrose tiling instead.

And today I found this ~1 hr talk by Peter Lu that shows how both methods are actually related! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rldnu9rNpH8
