#FOSSGIS #OSM

I was watching Mission: Impossible – Fallout and have noticed they've used #OpenStreetMap in one scene. I then proceeded to sit through the credits to see if they included the required attribution—they didn't :(

Wanted to fume about this online, but then I looked it up, and I'm not only the first person to notice, but there's apparently a #OSMWiki page that mentions this

@stahlmann Yes!

Mostly telecom=service_point (DSLAM/MSAN or OPT for optical) and telecom=exchange (HvT). I've put some more links to #osmwiki and some background info here:

https://todon.eu/@ljrk/114382830197212951

Within Berlin, we have only 3 "grey cabinets" tagged as connection_point (Kabelverzweiger, passive devices) and 89 as service_device (active devices that don't do distribution frames) as well as around 100 exchange's. The exchange tags are probably complete, but every exchange bundles a *lot* of connection_point's, or, with the increasing amount of outdoor DSLAMs, service_device's.

With FTTB/FTTH the DSLAM is either moved into the building (Micro DSLAM) or DSL is foregone completely, thus reducing the need to tag these, but KVz's still persist (as purely passive distribution points, now routing fiber rather than copper).
Also, most KVz are not tagged to specify the medium (fiber/copper) they are connected with, DSLAMs should probably always be tagged as fiber.

But not all "grey cabinets" are telecommunication infra, some are used for other devices. You can query them using https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:man_made%3Dstreet_cabinet.

¹: Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer/Multi-Service Access Node: Terminates DSL before routing to the Internet Service Provider (ISP). MSANs combine DSLAM with other functionality. OSM: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:telecom%3Dservice_device. Part of a HvT ("indoor DSLAM") or as an extended Kabelverzweiger (KVz) "grey cabinets" with DSLAM/MSAN functionality ("outdoor DSLAM"). Since DSLAMs require fiber, this requires extension of fiber network (FTTC) to the KVz/DSLAM. Pure KVz's are tagged as https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag%3Atelecom%3Dconnection_point (rarely used in Berlin) and can also run fiber (FTTC). FTTB/FTTH use a Micro-DSLAM in the building or forego DSL entirely. ²: Deutsche Telekom AG, big ISP in Germany. ³: Hauptverteiler: The exchange and switching centre, housing a Main Distribution Frame (MDF) and bundling multiple service devices and/or connection points for handover to the ISPs systems. OSM: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag%3Atelecom%3Dexchange ⁴: Ortsnetzkennzahl (wider area code), e.g. 30 for Berlin. OSM: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:onkz ⁵: Anschlussbereich (local area code), identifying a HvT, e.g., the 681 in tel.: 30 681 xxxx. OSM: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:asb ⁶: Fiber-To-The-Curb: Fiber to KVz or close-by Outdoor DSLAM, copper to the building & inside; Fiber-To-The-Building: Fiber also to the building; Fiber-To-The-Home: Fiber inside the building to e.g., the flat.

@ljrk is there a tagging for this? #osmwiki Link?

How can i see what is in Front of me, If it’s just ja white/grey „Blackbox“?

Want to create a time series animation like the one @bmacs001 posted, but for your favorite region? The #OSMWiki has the rudiments of a guide to creating one with {#OverpassTurbo or #OverpassUltra or #QLever} + #QGIS + #FFmpeg:

@elperronegro there are plenty of offline and online (active internet connection required) apps that can aid with your mapping experience.

Definitely would recommend to record all hiking trips, so that you can either upload the GPX file or overlay it in your editor of choice. I currently use #RunnerUp, though have used #FitoTrack and #OSMtracker in the past.

The #OSMWiki has a list of apps that can aid you. (If the ones I suggested disagree with your -case.)
