Maybe men are more comfortable openly listing their gender? I would not be surprised if that is the case, given how women are treated online.

This, of course, isn't mutually exclusive with Wikipedia being mainly male.

It is worth noting statistics do seem to support Wikimedia projects being overwhelmingly male: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Insights/Community_Insights_2024_Report#Gender

Of note:

Women were less well represented among Admins, of whom only 7% identified as women.

Wikimedia's 2026 community insights survey is ongoing; it will be interesting to see if it supports these older statistics.
