I am listening to endangered whales to reduce underwater noise pollution.

Artificial intelligence is making significant progress in the protection of orcas, monitoring their vocalizations in real-time to reduce their exposure to underwater noise. This project is focused on a critically endangered orca subspecies found in the Salish Sea, between the coasts of northwest United States and western Canada.

The Southern Resident orcas (Orcinus orca ater), consisting of only three groups, represent one of the most threatened populations of marine mammals worldwide. It is estimated that by December 2025, only 76 individuals will remain in the wild. Their survival is at risk from shipping traffic and underwater noise, as orcas use clicks and echolocation to hunt and locate members of their group in the ocean.

Whales and Dolphins (Marine Animals by Panini), Part 1

So after spending so long on a single company, reviewing in-depth every figure by Replica Toy Fish…why not work on a (nearly) entire series from a different company!? This time, I’m going to work through the marine figures produced by Italian company Panini. I will be approaching it differently–the figures are very small, and very stylized, so a relatively brief overview will be more […]

Wild Killer Whales Sometimes Offer Food to Humans, Scientists Say

In a paper published online in the Journal of Comparative Psychology, marine biologists report on 34 interactions spanning two decades in which killer whales (Orcinus orca) in the wild attempted to offer food to humans. The incid…

Type D Killer Whale (Wild Safari Sealife by Safari Ltd.)

Practically everyone has heard of the killer whale or orca (Orcinus orca), but probably not about the many different types that known to roam the world’s oceans. Perhaps the most mysterious of all them is the Type D killer whale, which inhabits sub-Antarctic waters between latitudes 40 degrees South and 60 degrees South.

Safari Ltd. is […]

Killer Whale, 2018 (Wildlife Ocean by Schleich)

The world’s largest and most visually striking dolphin, one of its most intelligent animals, and undisputedly one of its most accomplished predators, the killer whale (Orcinus orca) needs no introduction from me. Whether they’re attacking boats or wearing dead salmon as hats the orca is constantly generating interest and is one of our most beloved and familiar animals. Where toys and […]

Happy Shark Week! For a change, instead of reviewing a shark for this year, I will be reviewing a selected group of sea animals with a shark included, of course.

An introduction to Animal Heavenly Body. They are a Chinese company, akin to a mix of PNSO and Haolonggood with […]

Killer Whale, 2019 (Wild Safari Sealife by Safari Ltd.)

Orcas (I prefer this term over killer whales), Orcinus orca, don’t need an introduction. One of the most popular marine creatures, it is also a very common species in the toy market. It’s not difficult to see why: big, beautiful, and presenting one of the most unique and striking color patterns in the animal world, orcas are […]
