Arabian Sea humpback whale’s long-distance trip further highlights species’ unique ecology

Arabian Sea humpback whales have, at some point during their evolutionary history, adapted to living hyper-locally within the confines of the Arabian Sea. Now, researchers monitored their dives using satellite tags which allowed them to track their movement across the Arabian Sea. The results showed most whales are homebodies – moving within a narrow latitudinal band spanning just a few hundred kilometers. Just one whale broke the pattern and travelled across the Arabian Sea. This is the first direct evidence of a long-distance journey made by an Arabian Sea humpback whale. The team said better understanding of these whales’ movement could provide important insights for the endangered species’ conservation.

It is NOT okay to abuse anyone's #body for #profit. Therefore, it is neither okay to bring the remains of a #humpbackwhale to a "rendering plant" -no, that's not a #plant, it's an intricate part of a for-profit industrial exploitation and slaughter machinery-, instead of giving the remains back to the not-for-profit #system on the seafloor.

The humpback whale that got lost in the Baltic Sea. The whale wanted to live but didn't overcome the challenges we humans leave behind in our shared seas and oceans.

Although we tried to help and prayed, it ended up not being enough.

May we take the chance to finally rectify some of what we have done and are doing so that the brothers and sisters living in our shared seas will be able to thrive and enjoy life.

Not even the #vet flewn in from the #US was capable to agree with scientific and expert advice, and to acknowledge her lack of experience with large #whales.

There had been a reason why experts, including the #IWC, had decided to leave the #humpbackwhale alone - instead of -yes, i do use this expression, in spite of all good intentions there clearly were- torturing him, only to please the broad public.

The #WhaleSanctuaryProject should never have participated in the so-called #rescue attempt of that #humpbackwhale in the #BalticSea, because it was quite clear that that #animal was way too injured and ill to have any chance. I do not understand why these experienced people did not (want to) see that. None of the veterinarians involved had the courage to acknowledge that the case was out of their expertise either.
