Every spring brings a new delight from Donna Leon. Ostensibly crime novels, following the work and home life of Guido Brunnetti, a commissario (detective superintendent) in the Italian State Police, the books really treat Venice itself as the subject and the storyline. They are getting better through the years...

Jack had always been a dreamer, a tinkerer. After selling a chain of car repair shops and returning to college in his 60s, he called himself an #opsimath.
And what a career it was — degrees in engineering and physics in 4 years, running the campus radio station, publishing papers on quantum mechanics in 6. Jack finally ditched the tragedies that kept him out of academia earlier. This time, he’d do more than sketch and fix cars — he’d change the world. 1/2
"Life blood runs through my cracked veins for death is a mere door through which the knowing passes; a gully through which experience seeps. Taste the world, see its horizons, and pour it through my porous heart. Listen to the nightingale, touch a young boy's cheek, and flood my stonewashed desires. Sacrifice the living to feed my immortal thirst. Though an #opsimath I might have been, my learning is eternal."

An ancient king, once fierce & bold,
Sat his throne & his stories told:
Of battles won & lands he conquered,
His kingdom vast, his power nurtured.
But one day, as he sat & dreamed,
Of all the glories he had gleaned,
A curse fell upon him, swift & cruel,
Turning him to stone with all his jewels.
For centuries he sat, alone & still,
A statue athrone, atop a hill,
Until one day, an #opsimath found him,
The ancient king, so grand & grim.
As he aged, King Harold became more paranoid - convinced his enemies were plotting against him. An #opsimath, he studied new technologies to keep him safe, eventually
surrounding himself with strange contraptions he believed would keep him from harm.
He spent his days sitting his throne, surrounded by coils of pipes: his only protection.
By the time he realized the machines hardened his skin by slowly petrifying him, it was too late & he grasped his chest as his heart turned to stone.
