Opening major new fields in the North Sea would make almost no difference to the UK’s reliance on gas imports.

The Jackdaw field, one of the largest unexploited gasfields in the North Sea, would displace only 2% of the UK’s current imports of gas, which would leave the UK still almost entirely dependent on supplies from Norway and a few other sources.

New North Sea drilling would barely reduce UK gas imports at all, data shows

Exclusive: research finds Jackdaw field would provide only about 2% of current demand, and Rosebank only 1%

The Acorn Project

Sounds nice. What could it be? Perhaps some reforestation? Replacing inner city streets with green spaces? Getting everybody to grow some of their own food?

No. It's fucking carbon capture and making hydrogen from fucking natural gas.

WTAF?

This is about the fourth time that Rishi Sunak has boiled my piss today.

The cynicism is staggering.

Among those in the English goverment who accept climate science, the likely thinking is that Britain's contribution to worldwide emissions is around 1%, so 'maxing out' North Sea oil and gas will have little global effect.

Sunak's announcement today is a combination of pandering to domestic selfishness, and a single-digit salute to the rest of the world.

In his final months of office, England's failing PM adopts a literal scorched-earth policy. Labour will no doubt accept the new burning reality and carry on as heretofore.

May the gods have mercy on our souls.

"It is pure fantasy to think that the North Sea can somehow satisfy the UK’s demand for gas. As this research shows, there just isn’t that much gas left in UK waters... Stopping drilling is not ‘turning off the taps’, as some have put it, for the simple fact that the taps aren’t flowing any more, they’re dripping."

It was never an energy policy decision, and trade union support for new oil and gas exploration is shameful.

Proposed new UK oil and gas fields would provide at most three weeks of energy a year

Experts and former ministers have also said the developments would not reduce energy prices in the UK
