The cynicism is staggering.

Among those in the English goverment who accept climate science, the likely thinking is that Britain's contribution to worldwide emissions is around 1%, so 'maxing out' North Sea oil and gas will have little global effect.

Sunak's announcement today is a combination of pandering to domestic selfishness, and a single-digit salute to the rest of the world.

@hesgen And then other countries go ‘hey, we’re 0.1% to 2%, why don’t we do that as well?’ and before you know it the Paris agreement / Kyoto is lying in tatters…

Our actions don’t take place in a vacuum. Leadership matters.

@hesgen

Because of geopolitics, Sunak's extract more oil & gas madness, will cause other countries to compete (a ripple effect).

That's why reducing greenhouse gas emissions needs to be an international cooperative decision.

Sunak's policies could cause a geopolitical race to extract more "local" oil & gas for energy "security", that, will cause the planet to " burn" faster.

Sunak is sending a very dangerous "message" to world trade markets.
