Stardew valley is very educational. It has helped me to see that large social gatherings are perhaps an efficient way to "raise your hearts" with a large number of people by talking to each of them a little without having to hunt them down one by one.
So, maybe it's not just some form of torture invented by extroverts... it's just a friendship assembly line. Efficiency! Go to the coffee hour and say hello to each person and you are done for the week.
