Come funziona

Thailand is changing the rules for tourists without a visa. The news.

Thailand has decided to reduce the duration of visa-free stays for tourists from over 90 countries from 60 to 30 days, in most cases, as part of efforts to combat crime. “The current system has advantages, particularly for the economy, but it has also been abused by some people,” said government spokesperson Rachada Dhnadirek at a press conference.

Currently, citizens of more than 90 countries, including those in the Schengen Area, the United States, Israel, and Russia, can stay in Thailand for up to 60 days without a visa. The duration was extended in July 2024 to encourage the recovery of tourism after the Covid-19 pandemic.

How it works

The period will now be reduced to 30 days for most countries and 15 days for other countries, which will be identified on a case-by-case basis in consultation with their respective embassies.

Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow explained last week that the measure is part of the government’s efforts to combat transnational crime. Thailand, he specified, is not targeting any specific country but intends to strike individuals who abuse the visa system by engaging in illegal activities during their stay.

In recent months, several cases involving foreign nationals have received widespread media attention in the country, including those related to alcohol and drugs, public sexual behavior, and the operation of businesses such as hotels or private schools without the necessary permits.

The tourism sector represents more than 10% of Thailand’s gross domestic product, but the number of visitors has not yet returned to pre-pandemic levels. The Southeast Asian country anticipates welcoming approximately 33.5 million foreign tourists this year, more than three million less than initial estimates, also due to the war in the Middle East.

Tehran: “US and Israel attacks on gas infrastructure after Trump announced a truce”

The price of Brent crude oil has risen above $100 per barrel, after a collapse of more than 10% recorded on Monday following Donald Trump’s announcement of a five-day truce and subsequent postponement of new attacks against Iran. Tehran the next day announced that infrastructure related to the energy sector in Isfahan province and the southwestern city of Khorramshahr were struck by “U.S.-Israeli attacks” yesterday evening, contrary to statements by the U.S. president. According to the Fars agency, an office of the natural gas administration and a gas pressure reduction station were hit in Isfahan, with damage also affecting some nearby houses. In Khorramshahr, a pipeline connected to a power plant was targeted. Brent gained 2.9%, at $102.84, while West Texas Intermediate recorded a jump of 3.5% to $91.20.

On the gas front, European futures on natural gas fell to approximately €55.7 per MWh on Tuesday, extending the decline from three-year highs. Energy markets remain highly volatile, with the significant closure of the Strait of Hormuz limiting crude oil and LNG flows. Recent Iranian attacks have also reduced Qatar’s LNG export capacity by approximately 17%, and repairs to damaged facilities could take up to five years, according to QatarEnergy. With European gas stocks significantly depleted during the winter, the region could have difficulty replenishing its storage facilities this summer if disruptions persist and Asian competition for LNG supplies intensifies.
