The Magic of Mobula Ray Migration
During the migration season of mobula rays, which takes place between the end of April and July, these fascinating marine animals form enormous aggregations called “febbre”. The photograph shown above, captured by the founder and CEO of Mongabay, Rhett A. Butler, was taken in Baja California, a captivating state of northwest Mexico. This natural event enchants observers and offers a unique opportunity to study the social behavior of these creatures.

Baja California is a marine hotspot, hosting at least five species of mobula rays. Among these, the Munkula mobula, commonly known as the Devil of Munk or the pygmy Munk mobula, is the most common. It is currently classified as a vulnerable species on the IUCN Red List (International Union for Conservation of Nature).

Il Fatto Quotidiano: Manta si avvicina pericolosamente alla riva a Procida: decisivo il salvataggio in extremis – IL VIDEO

Una manta in evidente difficoltà è stata avvistata ieri nelle acque tra Ciraccio e la Chiaiolella, a Procida, a pochi metri dalla riva. La presenza così ravvicinata alla costa di un esemplare di questa specie ha immediatamente fatto scattare l’allarme, con diverse persone che hanno anche ripreso la scena con i cellulari. La segnalazione è stata trasmessa alla Guardia Costiera, che è intervenuta rapidamente coordinando le operazioni di recupero. Come riportato da Il Mattino, sul posto sono arrivati personale da terra e il battello GC 186, mentre è stato attivato anche un confronto con gli esperti della Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn di Napoli per seguire le corrette procedure di intervento e ridurre al minimo lo stress dell’animale.
La manta, appartenente alla specie Mobula mobular, nota anche come “diavolo di mare”, si muoveva in maniera lenta e disorientata in acque molto basse, condizione che ha reso necessario un intervento delicato per evitarne l’arenamento o ulteriori lesioni (probabilmente era ferita). Le operazioni si sono protratte per diversi minuti e hanno richiesto più tentativi prima di riuscire a guidare l’esemplare verso il largo. Fondamentale anche la collaborazione di alcuni presenti in spiaggia, che hanno contribuito a mantenere l’animale orientato nella direzione corretta, facilitandone il progressivo allontanamento dalla spiaggia. Una volta raggiunte acque più profonde, la manta è riuscita a riprendere il largo e successivamente è stata osservata mentre si allontanava, in condizioni considerate stabili.
La Guardia Costiera ha ringraziato i cittadini che hanno collaborato all’operazione, e ha sottolineato l’importanza della tempestività delle segnalazioni e della cooperazione tra istituzioni e comunità locale nella gestione di situazioni che coinvolgono fauna marina in difficoltà.

A struggling manta was sighted yesterday in the waters between Ciraccio and Chiaiolella, Procida, just meters from the shore. The presence so close to the coast of this species immediately triggered the alarm, with several people also recording the scene with their cell phones. The report was transmitted to the Coast Guard, which intervened quickly coordinating the recovery operations. As reported by Il Mattino, personnel from the ground and the GC 186 vessel arrived on the scene, and contact was established with experts from the Anton Dohrn Zoological Station in Naples to follow the correct procedures and minimize the animal's stress.

The manta, belonging to the Mobula mobular species, also known as the "devil fish," was moving slowly and disoriented in very shallow waters, a condition that necessitated a delicate intervention to avoid it becoming stranded or sustaining further injuries (it was likely injured). The operations lasted for several minutes and required several attempts before the specimen could be guided out to sea. The collaboration of some people on the beach was also crucial, who helped to keep the animal oriented in the correct direction, facilitating its progressive departure from the beach. Once deeper waters were reached, the manta was able to resume its course and was subsequently observed moving away, in conditions considered stable.

The Coast Guard thanked the citizens who cooperated in the operation and emphasized the importance of the timeliness of reports and the cooperation between institutions and the local community in managing situations involving marine animals in distress.
