Lining the top of the two outer pavilions, each caryatid is unique and holds an item relates to the arts or the sciences. Between them are carved the names musicians, artists and scientists.

William Mossman Junior's set of eight caryatids on the surviving facade of the 1870s St Andrew's Halls in Glasgow. Designed by James Sellars, this was a large concert and function venue. It was taken over by the Glasgow Corporation in 1889, and burned down in 1962, with only the western facade being saved, and later incorporated into an extension of the neighbouring Mitchel Library.

The Mitchell Library in Glasgow in looking magnificent against today's blue skies. Designed by William B. Whitie in an Edwardian Baroque style and opened in 1911, it's one of the largest public reference libraries in Europe. The two statues in this shot are Wisdom by Thomas John Clapperton (seated) and Literature by Johan Keller (on the top of the dome).
