On a train in the sunshine - listening to a modular synthesizer mix from the excellent Low Light Mixes http://lowlightmixes.blogspot.com/2024/12/back-to-roots-of-berlin-school-by-erwin.html thinking about our new RPG campaign using Tales of Argosa and wondering if session zero should actually be collaborative world building using Microscope RPG #rpg #TalesofArgosa #roleplaying #microscoperpg #berlinschool #lowlightmixes
Back To The Roots Of Berlin School by Erwin Broers

At the beginning of September when I posted my " Sequencer City " mix, I said I'd been on a berlin school bender. Well, now three months l...

Finally read #MicroscopeRPG by @benrobbins (after hearing good things for years) - intriguing #GMless game to both build a grand sweep of history and zoom into individual scenes (a bit more traditionally #RPG-like) which players want to explore. Rulebook is concise, but inspiring seeds and examples put flesh on what might have otherwise been abstract. (And as always I like explanations in the final sections on *why* certain design choices were made.) Now hoping to get to *play* it sometime!
I would love to play a #TTRPG of #MicroscopeRPG that used #CortexRPG for its **scenes**. Cortex games aren't "balanced," and there's hardly any power progression at all. Instead, characters might change how they prioritize values, skills, or relationships over time. Microscope games span centuries, though, so there would be few repeat characters anyway. Instead, players would stat out a new PC for every scene, which could happen three or four times per session.

no #HowToKickflipAHorse games this week but i'm playing #MicroscopeRPG remixed with #StarFrontiers on friday off stream and i made this while looking through the setting guide.

I am thrilled to be part of a playtest group for @AdamMakesTTRPG's new game #PlayingGod. It's a game that has a lot of storytelling potential.

If you're a fan of games like #MicroscopeRPG or #FollowRPG (made by #BenRobbins), it might be right in your wheelhouse.

My first step to fixing Microscope scenes: make them about people

A Microscope For The People

In a previous post I talked about the issues with scenes in Microscope. Issues that often lead players to avoid scenes, which (I think) robs you of the full experience of seeing how the big history affects human lives. The good news is that I've been working on a solution, which is to make scenes

@benrobbins - _Finally_ In This World made it to this playtester in Austria. 🤓

I love my physical copy, and I hope it will in time see so much play that it will look like my copy of Microscope, my favorite story game. 🔬

If you haven't seen it, it's a neat and tight little world-building game, where you build a world out of statements that are true about the world you know. 🫴🌍📖

Give it a try, and let me know how it goes!

The Microscope experience was bonkers. I didn't use it to play Microscope. I used it to explain the rules. It did so famously. Including knock on questions about the palette vs big picture using examples to explain the lens.

The bonkers part is using the voice chat in the android app. (headphones icon in the top right corner). We just talked in normal language. Seamless across BT on the commute to work.

PS not in the industry :)

To conclude, I'd say that associating #MicroscopeRPG and #QuestWorlds was a terrific idea. My players, all new to #ttrpgs had a huge blast. Building a world through that game was exciting to them and the lightness of the #rpg system was liberating in many ways. I'll call that a success.
Now, let's see what #Kingdom gives with #QuestWorlds. Let's already call it QuestDom. Soon... 5/5

As some of you know, I've recently experimented a creative approach to #ttrpg using @benrobbins's #MicroscopeRPG followed by a few #rpg sessions with @Chaosium and @ian_h_cooper's #QuestWorlds. We played on @foundryvtt & #discord.

The worldbuilding session gave a tyrannical scifi world full of cybernetics & my players were very keen on playing an event about the disappearance of the Marathon, a starship that made contact with a new species and that ended up in a very long intergalactic war. 1/5
