A few detail shots from the 23rd June NLC display. It's been a bad weather year for spotting NLC so far.
Red #Sprites are mesmerizing natural phenomena that occur high above thunderstorms.
They are large-scale electrical discharges that happen in the #mesosphere, a layer of the atmosphere between the stratosphere and the thermosphere.
During the first full week of May, a barrage of large solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) launched clouds of charged particles and magnetic fields toward Earth, creating the strongest solar storm to reach Earth in two decades — and possibly one of the strongest displays of auroras on record in the past 500 years.
After 16 years studying Earth’s highest clouds for the benefit of humanity – polar mesospheric clouds – from its orbit some 350 miles above the ground, NASA’s Aeronomy of Ice in the Mesosphere, or AIM, mission has come to an end. Initially slated for a two-year mission, AIM was extended numerous times due to its […]
Rise and grind!
Just kidding.
@jay and I set our clocks back a couple hours and did a 9AM show. Well-rested and over-caffeinated we talked about corporate conference room naming conventions, jury duty (#ACAB), #Musk's joke of a GenAI ("Grok"), Keith #Rabois's case of brainworms, and the sad demise of #Mesosphere. We also ran out of disk space in the middle of the show so there's a rather abrupt cut about halfway through.

Rise and grind! Just kidding. Jay and I set our clocks back a couple hours and do a 9AM show. Well-rested and over-caffeinated we get into corporate conference...
So @jay and I moved the, uh, "show" back an hour so we could all sleep in.
Which is great except I've been unable to sleep since 3AM. Sigh.
Anyway, tune in at 9AM Pacific to hear us talk about the latest #Twitter drama, jury duty, and the end of #Mesosphere.
You can also follow @live to get notified when we go, uh, live.

We are experiencing technical difficulties and we'd like you to experience those technical difficulties with us.
Seems like, after just over an incredible 16 years in the harsh environment of space, the AIM satellite, which has returned daily 'daisies' of mesospheric ('space') cloud images, has suffered an anomaly. The satellite's manager tells me that it's unclear whether the onboard computer system reset anomaly can be rectified. There are no planned replacement satellites for this science.
