Last year I posted a thread with tips on recognizing #NoctilucentClouds. I also posted a photo from 2019 when I caught an extremely rare outbreak of #NLC down at 37N in San Jose - that was before I moved to Portland at 45.5N where I can expect to see them again. https://spacey.space/@AstroHawk/114617411974306405 #NLC #astronomy #SpaceWeather #weather

To recognize #NoctilucentClouds, it has to be white to electric blue light reflecting on thin clouds around an hour after sunset or before sunrise when the sun is well below the horizon. These mysterious clouds are at 80km/50mi altitude (80% of the way to space) making them very difficult to research, and therefore not well understood. They are also special because they occur on both Earth and Mars. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noctilucent_cloud #NLC #SpaceWeather

"Noctilucent Clouds, strange icy clouds on the edge of space, can be seen from your back garden" by BBC @skyatnightmag - #NoctilucentClouds at 80km altitude are not well understood, such as how water vapor, presumed basis of all clouds, gets up that high. But they can be seen at polar latitudes (45-80°) in early Summer ~90-120 minutes after sunset or before sunrise as the near-space clouds are lit by sunlight and viewer is at night. https://www.skyatnightmagazine.com/advice/skills/noctilucent-clouds-what-they-are-and-how-to-see-them #NLC #astronomy #SpaceWeather #weather

High altitude clouds on the edge of space, noctilucent clouds or NLCs are a delight for summer stargazers. Find out how to see them.

A reminder that, in late May, the N hemisphere noctilucent cloud season starts again.

Best time throughout the season is from local midnight towards dawn, looking N-NE, typically around 15 degrees above a clear horizon, but sometimes much higher.

Deep twilight evening displays, (N/NW) are common, but a cold atmospheric tide means they are more likely in the post-midnight period. Not visible at day.

The season closes early-mid August. Climate may be extending the season.

#GinWatchNL New gins at NLC!
I swear #NLC only bring in new gin twice a year.

(Of the Empress 1908 bottles, only the clear one is new; just wanted to include the price tag.)

All three are Canadian #gin, which I appreciate.
