Success! The #maclinuxbuild lives. I’m working out some kinks with the GPU but so far just the normal #linux things to work out. I decided to go with @ubuntu after testing a few different distros it had the best out of the box support. The most exciting part of the #maclinuxbuild aside from from the #linux #os install has to be #gpu day! Opted for an #amd rx 6600 xt. These got a lot of flack at release because price to performance was not there. They were also released during a time of high gpu prices but they’ve come down quite a bit. It’s also the best option that my research turned up which does not require the #pixlas #mod. Good enough for #gaming, light #editing and a #Plex #server. #foss #floss #opensource #slowtech

The thing I am most curious to explore in my #maclinuxbuild is how well @kdenlive will handle #xavc 4K 10-bit footage. I’m eyeing @pop_os_official for this unconventional set up. A less exciting #maclinuxbuild update but nonetheless important. This CR2032 battery is for the NVRAM in the #macpro These batteries generally have a lifespan of 5-10 years and since this #mac is from 2010, was bought on craigslist, and its history is unknown to me, spending $5 on a battery is an easy “yes” for me. It’s amazing how repairable and upgradable this thing is. Especially w/ the #partspairing limitation in new #Apple #hardware #foss #floss #opensource #slowtech #diy #rightorepair

The USB 2.0 and FireWire 800 ports that the #macpro ships with are more for show than anything else😄So the next upgrade for the #maclinuxbuild is a USB 3+Thunderbolt USBC ports via PCIe. #slowtech #foss #floss #opensource #linux #oldtech

Okay the SSD has arrived for the #maclinuxbuild I’m using a 480GB SSD as the startup disk which will be housed where the optical drive used to be. I’ll eventually have additional storage in the other vacant optical drive bay as well as the four lower bays.
