I'm picking up some Low German books again. My favorite part about this is all the weird words and figures of speech that have fallen out of use and gone extinct
"Aberst da harr'ne Ule säten" ("but an owl had sat there")
I'm not sure what it means? From context, it sounds like an activity that is bound to fail from the start/completely misguided
@elmerot @linguistics That is definitely a possibility, but not a certain fact. That etymology would result in two different explanations for #FennoSwedish “mojn” and “morjens” respectively.
The Finnish greeting is discussed in Mikko #Bentlins doctoral thesis on Middle #LowGerman loanwords in #Finnish.
Equally intriguing, but not discussed anywhere, is the origin of Baltic #Finnic “hei”.

#Mexican photographer Eunice Adorno has explored the reclusive lives of #Mennonite women, who live in the Mexican states of #Durango and #Zacatecas. Approximately 100,000 Mennonites (an ethno-religious group who speak Low German languages) live throughout #Mexico, mostly in the North part of the country. They are similar (but not the same as) to the Amish people of the USA and Canada.
