Ah success !
I think the issue was that the #Langis version I was using was built on a pre-release. So may have simply been a bug.
Now both the signal and langis versions have incremented, and are sitting on the same "normal release"
I did notice molly is a few versions behind.
Signal could have been directly distributed on #fdroid without Google spyware

Well, restoring my #signal backup fails. Changed android ROMs, hence the need. I can even get so far as seeing the restored conversations. But trying to open one leads to the app crashlooping. I've tried to repeat the process a few times without success.
I tried different signal apps: #langis, #molly, signal from aurora store, signal apk from the website. No dice.
So no signal for now, bleuhrg 😒
My #xmpp and #matrix restores worked fine.
