Controversial police statistics - the recording of politically motivated crime put to the test

Hostility towards men or even Germanophobia are relatively new categories in the PMK statistics and have recently been criticised time and again, at least from the left.

But how did these political battle terms make it into the police statistics? How are these statistics politically moulded? And why, for example, are offences committed by so-called ‘Reichsbürger’ often recorded as ‘non-political’ and how does this distort the statistics?

After a brief input, we want to discuss with you how right-wing violence is depoliticised and trivialised by the police.

On closer inspection, the motto turns out to be a Nazi slogan, revealing not only contempt and mockery, but also crimes and promises. The motto combines eliminatory anti-Semitism with the National Socialist concept of labour.

In the evening, Nikolas Lelle will present central ideas from his book and read a few passages.

Nikolas Lelle has been working at the Amadeu Antonio Foundation since 2020 and focuses primarily on anti-Semitism, the memory of National Socialism and ‘German labour’.

In 2018, together with Felix Axster, he published the volume, ‘Deutsche Arbeit. Critical perspectives on an ideological self-image’ (Wallstein Verlag). In 2022, Verbrecher Verlag published his doctoral thesis ‘Arbeit, Dienst und Führung. National Socialism and its legacy’.

‘Our labour makes us free’, a high-ranking National Socialist shouted to his so-called Volksgenossen in the middle of the Second World War.

In doing so, he was drawing on the long tradition of ‘German labour’, according to which Germans should have a very special relationship with work. At the same time, he modified a concentration camp inscription. After all, ‘Arbeit macht frei’ was emblazoned on the camp gates of Auschwitz, Dachau and Sachsenhausen. But what does the phrase actually mean? Whose labour sets whom free? And above all: from what? To answer these questions, Nikolas Lelle takes a look at texts by Shoah survivors Primo Levi, Jean Améry and Tibor Wohl, who each wrote about the Nazi motto ‘Labour makes you free’.
