Ancient Robot Workshop – New Makerspace For Tabletop Games
Get ready to level up your tabletop game design because Ancient Robot Workshop is gearing up for launch on Leith Walk this May!
Think of it as a collaborative hub and co-working space specifically for tabletop game creatives – board games, card games, RPGs, you name it! They are not just offering desks and speedy Wi-Fi; members will have access to fantastic resources like 3D printers, die cutters, and print stations to bring their visions to life.
Team!
The Ancient Robot Workshop is being brought to life by Dougal Frier, owner of the fantastic Ancient Robot Games on Leith Walk, and Robert Gelb, a local board game designer, serial entrepreneur (and founder of the excellent Campfire newsletter). Their motivation is simple: game design can often be a solitary pursuit. They believe that creating a space for collaboration, feedback, and simply being around others who share the same passion will lead to faster learning and mutual growth. Plus, they reckon Edinburgh has the potential to be a real powerhouse for tabletop game development, and they’re excited to play a part in making that happen!
The team are absolutely buzzing to create a dedicated space for Scotland’s vibrant community of tabletop game enthusiasts and creators. Whether you’re a seasoned videogames pro looking to branch into physical games, a budding designer with a brilliant idea, or simply someone who loves being part of the game development process, the Ancient Robot Workshop is for you.
What’s the Ancient Robot Workshop all about?
As a Community Interest Company, the mission is to foster and support the growth of tabletop game development right here in Scotland. They are also planning a treasure trove of online resources, regular talks from industry folks, and a handy directory connecting tabletop game creatives across Scotland.
Who’s it for?
If you’re a game designer, artist, writer, or any other creative soul working on tabletop games – whether it’s your full-time gig, a passionate side project, or a beloved hobby – they believe this workshop can help you craft even more amazing games.
And if you’re someone who loves to support game development through playtesting or by staying in the loop with the latest local creations, they want you to be part of their community too! They will be sharing news from their members and hosting regular playtesting sessions and demo days for everyone to experience the exciting games brewing in their workshop.
What can you expect?
The Ancient Robot Workshop (ARW) will be a professional, welcoming, and positive environment where folks can work, connect with fellow creatives, collaborate on projects, prototype their designs, playtest their creations, and receive valuable feedback and advice.
Beyond regular working hours, they will be opening their doors for evening workshops, playtest meetups, and dedicated prototyping time. So even if you’ve got a day job, you’ll have ample opportunities to dedicate time to your game development journey.
Where can you find it?
The Workshop can be found in the iconic Red Sandstone Building on Leith Walk. Getting there is a breeze with bus stops for the 7, 14, 16, 25, 49, N14, and N16 right outside. Plus, the Balfour Street and Foot of the Walk tram stops are just a short 5-minute walk away (yes, they’ve timed it!). The building is also fully accessible.
Roll for damage? (Cost)
They are still figuring out the perfect membership structure to ensure the workshop’s long-term sustainability while providing maximum value to their community. For the first month after launch, using the space will be free – a chance for everyone to experience what they have to offer!
The current thinking involves three membership tiers:
The team are keen to get feedback from the community and may adapt their setup based on what works best for everyone.
Ready to get involved?
Spread the word! Share this with anyone you think might be interested in the Ancient Robot Workshop – game designers, artists, writers, editors, cartographers, playtesters, and even the occasional wizard!
Sign up for updates at ancientrobotworkshop.co.uk so you don’t miss the official launch date announcement!
Got an idea for a workshop? Keen to lead one? Or just want to lend a hand? Get in touch and say hello! They’d love to hear your thoughts, feedback (or anything else you’d like to share).
You can also follow their journey on Instagram and Bluesky, and don’t forget to subscribe to their newsletter for all the latest news!
They can’t wait to welcome you to the Ancient Robot Workshop!
