Today's historic photo of the day: the interior of the manual signal cabin at Kuranda, Qld, July 26 1986

#Kuranda is 34km northwest of Cairns on the 1067mm gauge Atherton Tablelands line. These days it is the terminus of the Kuranda Tourist train that twice daily brings tourists from Cairns up the spectacular line through the Barron Gorge. The tourist trains ran in 1986 too, but back then, there were also regular goods trains and passenger railcars further west to Mareeba and Ravenshoe.

On this day in 2014, I travelled on the Savannahlander from Mareeba to Kuranda in Queensland.

The Savannahlander is a 4 day rail tour that runs from Cairns to Forsyth and return. The return journey is a leisurely 424km, and runs weekly for most of the year.

The journey is made by vintage 2000 class railcars, and is the only train running beyond Kuranda.

Caught a train along the spectacular Kuranda Scenic Railway this morning. Now I'm having a beer at the pub while @NarrelleMHarris has a look around the town. Tough day.
