Hey it's #alternateFridayMusic š
and the cue this week is:
that striped sunlight sound
In the late 70's a musical renaissance was happening in the authoritarian state of #Queensland. From the Saints at the forefront of punk, a musical movement started that continues to this day. One band went another way, crafting that #stripedSunlight sound, I give you the most perfect pop-song of all time:
The Go-Betweens - Spring Rain
There's an official video but the sound is muted, so I had to dig and find a copy that was mixed correctly.
A few weeks later I came up with āthat striped sunlight soundā. It was a #Brisbane thing, to do with sun slanting in through windows onto objects in a room, and the feelings that evoked. Years before, Iād taken photos of the Suzuki leaning against a wall with the sun on its honey-coloured body, and somehow all of this got linked to the sound The Go-Betweens made. We stuck this description onto the sleeve of our single as an answer to an imagined interview. The phrase endured, and became a term referencing a bright poppy Brisbane sound with winsome or witty lyrics attached

š¶ Dressed in a white shirt with my hair combed straight
Here in my black shoes and me without a date
Me without hindsight, me without
When will change come, just like spring rain
Standing on the lawn with cousins and child brides
Caught for the camera on their best sides
Being caught forewarned their best sides
When will change come just like spring rain
Driving my first car, my elbow's in the breeze
With all these people that I never, never need
These people are excited by their cars
I want surprises just like spring rain š¶
