I really thought I'd finally found it, I really thought I'd found why the smoke detectors liked to go off for fun at random times, more memorably at night, most memorably around 1-3am, when I found that long-term defective connector but
GUESS NOT
"Anything to declare?" "Yeah, don't buy Kidde."
seriously, fuck kidde.
We're ditching all of 'em. every single one. fuck 'em. DO NOT BUY KIDDE, they don't even honour warranties.
Trying BRK this time, they're the same people as First Alert, but it's the contractor brand. Combo smoke/CO detectors. They're more expensive. Hopefully they'll also be better.
FUCK kidde.
Hey I just want to give a shout out to #Kidde the smoke alarm people. I had a wireless alarm start chirping today and its less than a year old.
Bracing for chatbot hell I called the phone number on the back of the unit. To my surprise very nice lady with a Southern accent answered and helped me through the entire reset process.
An actual human, with a sense of humor rather than a nasty #chatbot
So Impressed π
After some digging I found First Alert and Kidde offering devices similar in function (networkable combination alarms, that is) but uglier. But just like X-Sense, they only ship within the US, and not even to all states. It would be mildly interesting to know what the presumably compliance-related issue behind that limitation is.

I found the answer! #Kidde actually did do the research. It turns out that it's because houses are typically cooler at night than during the day, and that increases the resistance in an already-low battery to the point where it triggers the voltage sensor.
Fascinating.
This is not a joke or a bit:
Why do smoke detector batteries always die overnight?
I legitimately want to know. I have been an adult living on my own (i.e. responsible for #SmokeDetectors) for 18 years now. I've probably replaced a dozen #batteries over that time period. I've never done so in daylight, and usually it's after midnight.
Has anyone done this research? Is anyone from #Kidde on the Fediverse? I need to know.
