THE HBC BRIGADES: CULTURE, CONFLICT, & PERILOUS JOURNEYS
There are a number of old trails through the Grand Prairie that were the first Brigade trails that ran through that region. Their history has been buried by time, but some local historians have found the old trail beds, and described them. #Journeys #TheHBCBrigades #WestOfTheMountains https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/brigade-trail-2/
THREE JOURNEYS NORTH TO THE ARCTIC SEA:
The ramparts of the mighty Mackenzie River were an impressive sight (and still are). In 1851, Robert Campbell passed through the ramparts (twice), and left a good description of this impressive landmark. #Journeys #NorthwestTerritories #NWT #ThreeJourneysNorth https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/ramparts/
THE YORK FACTORY EXPRESS: FORT VANCOUVER TO HUDSON BAY, 1826-1849
The old HBC name for the Yellowhead Pass--once known as the Tete Jaune Pass--was Leather Pass, mostly because the #FortStJames men got their delivery of #Edmonton House leather through that pass. "Leather" was bison hides, used for shoes, clothing, ties, travel, and trade. #Journeys #TheHBCBrigades https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/leather-pass/
THE HBC BRIGADES: CULTURE, CONFLICT, & PERILOUS JOURNEYS
As always, the early trails found the easiest routes through the hills and valleys of any territory, and any roads, trails, or railways that followed the old trails obliterated them. Knowing this finally made me realize where the trail actually had run. #TheHBCBrigades #Journeys #WestOfTheMountains https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/new-trails-follow-old/
THE YORK FACTORY EXPRESS: FORT VANCOUVER TO HUDSON BAY, 1826-1849
In the early winter of 1846, the artist Paul Kane began a long foot journey across the Rocky Mountains, leaving #Jasper's House with the incoming York Factory Express party. It wasn't winter when he left Jasper, but winter did soon arrive. #Journeys #YorkFactoryExpress #HBCHistory https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/paul-kane-7/
THE HBC BRIGADES: CULTURE, CONFLICT, & PERILOUS JOURNEYS
In the early years, the HBC Brigade trails led the men south from the old post of #Kamloops, through the Grand Prairie and past Okanagan Lake to historic #Okanagan House, on the Columbia River. #TheHBCBrigades #Journeys #WestOfTheMountains https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/brigade-six/
THREE JOURNEYS NORTH TO THE ARCTIC SEA:
In 1851, Robert Campbell and his men arrived at Lapierre House, on the Porcupine River #Yukon, and made their way across the Richardson Range to the Peel's River post #FortMcPherson on the waters of the Mackenzie River, in the #NorthWestTerritories #NWT #Journeys #ThreeJourneysNorth https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/peel-river-post/
THE YORK FACTORY EXPRESS: FORT VANCOUVER TO HUDSON BAY, 1826-1849
In the summer of 1833, Peter Skene Ogden sailed north to view the mouth of the Stikine River. A year later he came north to build a post there, and was chased away by the Russians. This little action changed the history of the HBC and forced the men of the York Factory Express to deliver otter skins from the east side of the Rockies to the west. #YorkFactoryExpress #Journeys #HBCHistory https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/otter-skins/
THE HBC BRIGADES: CULTURE, CONFLICT, & PERILOUS JOURNEYS
Peter Warren Dease is the second Chief Factor of #FortStJames who led out the HBC Brigades to #Kamloops and Fort #Vancouver #WA, and I learned that he was an interesting and very likeable man. #TheHBCBrigades #Journeys #WestOfTheMountains https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/peter-warren-dease/
THE YORK FACTORY EXPRESS: FORT VANCOUVER TO HUDSON BAY, 1826-1849
From tiny Fort Assiniboine, on the Athabasca River, the incoming York Factory Express men paddled upriver to #Jasper's House, on their way home to Fort #Vancouver on the other side of the Rocky Mountains. #YorkFactoryExpress #Journeys #HBCHistory https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/eighteenth-leg/
