THE HBC BRIGADES: CULTURE, CONFLICT, & PERILOUS JOURNEYS
In 1826, and in 1831, the men of the incoming HBC Brigades made their way up the Columbia River from Fort Nez Perces #WallaWalla to Fort Okanogan, which lay at the junction of the #Okanagan River with the Columbia. Here they moved their packs and goods to packhorses, to continue their journey north. #TheHBCBrigades #Journeys #WestOfTheRockies https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/brigade-eleven/

In 1826, and later in 1831, the outgoing HBC Brigades make their way up the Columbia River from the east side of the Long Narrows -- that is, the passageway through the Cascade Mountains to Fort Nez Perces #WallaWalla #Journeys #TheHBCBrigades #WestOfTheMountains https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/ten-half/
THE HBC BRIGADES: CULTURE, CONFLICT, & PERILOUS JOURNEYS
The men of the North West Company called the passage through the Cascade Mountains the "Long Narrows." For the HBC men it was just called the Grande Dalles, or Big Canyon if translated into English. Whatever name they gave to this narrows, it was a long and hard upriver passage, both for the men of the HBC Brigades, and those of the York Factory Express! #Journeys #TheHBCBrigades #YorkFactoryExpress https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/grande-dalles/

The HBC Brigades, and the York Factory Express, travelled much the same route every summer, but never at the same time nor in the same direction. In 1826, James Connolly arrived at Fort #Vancouver #WA in mid summer, at the same time that John McLeod's Express was at York Factory, on Hudson Bay. #TheHBCBrigades #YorkFactoryExpress #Journeys https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/brigades-and-expresses/

Fort Vancouver #WA was the headquarters of the Hudson's Bay Company west of the Rocky Mountains. There is always more to learn about the original post, which was built over the winter of 1824-25, on a ridge that loomed above the site of the present Fort Vancouver. #Journeys #TheHBCBrigades https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/fort-vancouver/

From the old Fort Nez Perces, the men travelling in the HBC Brigades finally arrived at their destination of Fort #Vancouver where they would deliver their packs of furs and pick up their supply of trade goods for the next year. For the men of #FortStJames, it would be a thousand-mile-long journey home. #Journeys #TheHBCBrigades https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/brigade-eight/

There were many routes the brigade trails used through the Grande Prairie region. Some of them were North West Company trails for the provisioning brigades, which others were truly brigade trails for the HBC. In other words, they were all horse trails, but used for different purposes. #TheHBCBrigades #Journeys #BCHistory https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/brigade-trail-2/
