@petealexharris The #UK wants to be increasingly friendly with the European Union #EU. The EU includes the Republic of Ireland. The Republic of Ireland could, through the EU, make refusing a #BorderPoll extremely costly for the UK.

However, that would depend on the Irish government really wanting a #UnitedIreland, which, even though #SinnFein are currently in power, just ain't necessarily so.

Hard to refuse a #BorderPoll in #Ireland on these sort of numbers. Hard to approve a Border Poll without also granting #ScottishIndependence and #WelshIndependence referenda.

Tough choices for #Westminster

The dissolution of the UK is getting closer

The poll indicated that if a referendum were held tomorrow on a united Ireland in the EU, 59% in Ireland would vote in favour and 22% against, with 63% voting in favour in Northern Ireland and 29% against.

The performance of Irishness for outside approval is finished

Kneecap, Sally Rooney and the comedian Vittorio Angelone ask a question the State has avoided for years: what is all of this for, if not for us?

The Irish Times

We've seen this every time, regardless of the merits of the crisis or the protest. Everything from bringing in birthright citizenship because the minister for justice didn't like black people, to repealing the eighth amendment, to boycotting Dunnes for selling apartheid products, to bringing condoms from Belfast on the train, to calling for a mass grave of children in Tuam to be excavated, to neutrality protest, divorce protests, everything.

#irishpol

I see the press has reached the ad hominem stage of its crisis response protocol. It's so tiresome seeing this every time. Forget the crisis, look at the bad history of those actors, but never these actors. Pick one protester, find out they're a real shit; but do not, whatever you do, report on the failings and shittiness of any government TD or Minister (but report on the shittiness of any opposition TD you want to, they're fair game).

This is why we can't have nice things.

Six-one's journalists sure are thirsty for some heads to be cracked, and the Ministers are just being tired calm centerists who're just so terribly sorry but cracking heads is sadly necessary.

Give it a week, they'll drop the carbon tax entirely and be so terribly sorry that climate change is sadly necessary.
