Most skincare guides focus too heavily on advertising products and too little on damage prevention. My skincare and haircare routine is minimalistic and only contains a few products but I put a lot of effort into minimizing the damage to my skin, hair and scalp.
I keep myself hydrated and try my best to keep my alcohol & sugar consumption low. I never use hot water on my face & hair and I avoid touching my face & hair with dirty hands. I wear sunscreen and a cap outdoors. I never wear hair accessories or hairstyles that put pressure on my scalp and I cover my hair when while frying food. I rarely wear makeup and therefore wash my face with lukewarm water only on most days. I try to keep my face relaxed when I'm stressed out. I avoid getting sick or applying mechanical damage like massaging/scrubbing my face roughly. I change my pillowcase a few times a week.
It's usually easier to prevent damage than to repair it afterwards but it's also easier to make money advertising products than advising what not to do.
