Did you ever wonder who worked the sugar plantations in the #Caribbean after the #abolition of #slavery?

After the 1833 Emancipation Bill, the sugar cane industry had a problem. It needed cheap workers.

The solution was the importation of #indentured servants from #India and #China.

"Coolies" worked the same fields as #slaves had & were treated similarly.

But #Chinese coolies were seen as "better", while #Indian coolies were regarded as childish.

The practice ended in 1912.
